Brain-to-Vehicle Technology? Nissan Shares Its Vision For Future Mobility

At CES Asia 2019, Nissan is sharing its vision for the future of mobility, merging real and virtual worlds to assist drivers.
Through the Nissan Intelligent Mobility division, the company will demonstrate its innovative Invisible-to-Visible and Brain-to-Vehicle (B2V) technologies and show the electric, all-wheel-drive IMs concept car at the trade show in Shanghai. Together, these displays will give customers insight into Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the brand’s vision for changing how cars are powered, driven and integrated into society.
Nissan’s Brain-to-Vehicle technology is a world first, interpreting the driver’s brain signals to assist with driving. By anticipating the driver’s reactions, the B2V system can help initiate manoeuvres more quickly. It can also learn from the driver and make adjustments to reduce discomfort.

“At Nissan, we always aim to be ahead of the curve,” said Roel De Vries, senior vice president for marketing at Nissan. “We don’t just anticipate future trends and technologies, we define them. We believe technology should solve real-world problems and benefit as many people as possible. This is the idea behind Nissan Intelligent Mobility, our vision for moving people to a better world.”
By merging the real and virtual worlds, Invisible-to-Visible (I2V) can significantly help drivers on busy stress, allowing them to look around a corner or behind a building through. By combining information from sensors inside and outside the car with data from the cloud, I2V can not only understand what’s happening in the immediate area but also anticipate what’s ahead, helping drivers feel more confident.
I2V makes use of several technologies, including ProPILOT that delivers information about the environment around the vehicle, Omni-Sensing technology provides real-time traffic data and SAM (Seamless Autonomous Mobility) technology which analyses real-time data about the road environment. The system was recently field tested at Nissan’s proving ground in Yokosuka, Japan, using 5G mobile communications technology.

Trafi and Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the main public transport company in Berlin, will launch a new application in the summer called Jelbi. The app will include all different types of transportation in the city, and offer a one-stop shop for people travelling in Berlin.
Jelbi will connect new and traditional transportation in the city, including the entire public transportation system, scooters, bikes, ride-hailing and carsharing, as well as traditional taxis. This means that users will no longer have to endure ‘app-jumping’ as they travel, with all mobility modes integrated together onto one accessible platform that allows planning and booking.
For the upcoming launch, 10-15 private providers will be integrated. The service is being continuously extended to include more options and will be available on both iOS and Android.
“90 years ago the founding idea for BVG was to offer an easy access to mobility: one ticket for all different services. Thanks to new innovation we are now realising this idea with a solution fit for the 21st century. With one single app you can easily plan and purchase your journey, no matter what type of transport you prefer. Based on Trafi’s technology platform, we are able to once again offer a single and fully encompassing mobility solution for the people of Berlin,” said Dr. Henrik Haenecke, Management Board Finances, Digitization and Sales at BVG.
“The partnership between Trafi and BVG represents a bridge between traditional and innovative mobility solutions. In Berlin, we are now spearheading how transport providers and cities can run their mobility network with innovative technology. Trafi has been able to build a tailor-made application in record time and together with BVG, we are proud to launch a service representing the future of mobility now,” said Christof Schminke, Managing Director Germany at Trafi.
